Northwest African American Museum

Opened in 2008, Northwest African American Museum (NAAM) serves to present and preserve the connections between the Pacific Northwest and people of African descent and investigate and celebrate Black experiences in America through exhibitions, programs and events. The museum is housed in the historic Colman School building overlooking a beautiful, sprawling green park, named after rock legend, Jimi Hendrix, in the heart of Seattle's Central District.

The museum has 17,000 square feet of floor space, including a gift shop, galleries for temporary and permanent exhibitions, and three spaces available to the public. The museum's exhibitions and programs feature the visual arts, music, crafts, literature and history of African Americans in the Northwest. Cognizant of the black community's continuous evolution, NAAM focuses on African Americans whose route to the new world was through slavery as well as recent immigrants arriving from places such as Somalia, Sudan and Ethiopia.

In 2019, NAAM is selected for the first cohort of the Standards and Excellence Program by the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture and the American Association for State and Local History, one of only seven institutions in the country selected for the first cohort. The museum is also one of 15 museums across the country named a finalist for the National Medal for Museum Service Award given by the Institute for Museum and Library Services.
