earn airline milesIf you spend a lot of time in flight, you may want to earn more miles through hotel stays. Hilton HHonors offer members two ways to earn airline miles. You can either choose “points & miles” as your earning style when enrolling the HHonors rewards program. Or you can earn points first and convert to miles later on.

How many miles do I earn from hotel stays?

Basically you will earn 10 Base Points and 1 mile for every $1 spent on room rates and services at Conrad, Canopy, Curio, Hilton, DoubleTree, Embassy Suites, Hilton Garden Inn, Hilton Grand Vacation, and Waldorf Astoria. 10 Basic Points and 1 mile for every $1 spent on room rate for Hampton and Homewood Suites. 5 Points and 1 mile for every $1 spent on room rate for Home2 Suites. You can only earn a maximum of 100 airline or rail miles per stay.

How do I convert HHonors Points for airline miles?

Many hotel loyalty programs allow you to transfer rewards points to airline miles, Hilton HHonors is doing the same. You can convert your points into airline miles with one of Hilton’s many frequent flyer partners. Participating airlines include domestic carriers, such as Delta and United, as well as international carriers like British Airways and Virgin Atlantic. You can view a full list of transfer partners here. Exchanges are in increments of 10,000 points unless otherwise stated. Exchanges may take up to 30 days to process; you can expedite the processing for a fee of $25 USD and usually requires a minimum of 10 business days.

xhilton-hhonors.jpg.pagespeed.ic.cliXA-M5usWhen joining the Hilton HHonors Rewards program, you need to keep in mind three things. First of all, you will earn Hilton HHonors points only when you book directly from Hilton. Second, you need to find out how Hilton HHonors points work. The third, you need to understand what “my way earning style” is.

Book Direct

You will earn Hilton HHonors points only when you book directly from Hilton. What does that mean? That means only when you book through Hilton.com, Hilton direct booking line, Hilton hotel, you are allowed to earn HHonors points. If you book from online third party travel agency such as expedia.com, booking.com, priceline.com, you are not able to earn rewards points.

Two Types of HHonors Points

There are two types of HHonors Points: HHonors Base Points and HHonors Bonus Points. The HHonors base points will count toward your qualification for elite status; the bonus points can only be added to your total points for redemption.

Two Way to Earn Rewards

Hilton HHonors offer members two ways to earn rewards: “Points & Points” or “Points & Miles”. When choosing “Points & Points”, you will earn base points plus bonus points on the dollar you spend in Hilton Hotels and if you choose “Points & Miles”, you will earn base points plus miles on the dollar you spend.

When enroll the HHonors rewards program, don’t forget to choose either “Points & Points” or “Points & Miles” in “My Way Earning Style Option” in your profile, otherwise, you will lose your bonus points or miles and only earn base points.

Here are the steps you can follow to secure your bonus points or miles:

1. Enroll to Hilton HHonors – this is easy, just follow the instructions.
2. In account overview, choose “Edit Preferences”;

preference

3. In “preference” page, under “MYWAY EARNING STYLE PREFERENCES” click “change earning style”, you will see the following screen;
hilton myway earning style

4. In “choose a my way earning style” page, you can find there are 2 earning options: points & points, points & miles, choose your preferred option style.

If you spend a lot of time in flight, then the Points & Miles Earning Style is right for you. If you want to maximize your points to earn free hotel rewards nights as soon as possible, then you should choose Points & Points as your earning style. You are not able to earn “miles & miles” instead of “points & miles”. However, HHonors points can be transferred to airline miles. Also, you can change your preferred earning method directly in the settings of your Hilton HHonors account any time you change your mind.

icon-best-price-guaranteeIf you are a Hilton HHonors loyalty program member, the best way to book your hotel is to book directly through hilton.com – that is the only way you can earn Hilton HHonors rewards points for free hotel nights. If you book from third party travel websites such as expedia.com, booking.com or orbitz.com, you are not able to accumulate HHonor points.

Does that mean you may miss a lowest hotel price? Nope, if you book direct from Hilton.com and then you find a lower, publicly available price anywhere else within 24 hours of your booking, Hilton will match it and give you a $50 credit, that is what Hilton Best Price Guarantee offers.

For Hotels inside the USA, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico, Hilton will give you a US $50 American Express Gift Cheque. The Gift Cheque will be sent to you the next business day after your stay is completed. For Hotels outside the USA, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico, Hilton will adjust your bill by US $50 (or local currency equivalent).

How to File a Best Price Guarantee Claim

In order to claim best price guarantee credit, you need to provide a confirmation number. So you must first have a confirmed reservation made through one of the official Hilton Worldwide booking channels:

 • Any official Hilton Worldwide website
 • Hilton Reservations & Customer Care
 • Directly at a hotel in the Hilton Worldwide portfolio
 • Through an IATA accredited retail travel agent professional (“Travel Agent”) booking through a Hilton Worldwide channel or the following Global Distribution Systems: Amadeus, Apollo/Galileo, Worldspan and SABRE.

Next, you must find a lower publicly available price on a non-Hilton Worldwide booking channel (except for “opaque” websites) for the same room type, at the same hotel, with the same dates and length of stay, same number of guests, same designation as either cancellable or non-cancellable, same advance purchase policies, and the same terms and conditions governing the room price.

Finally, you must complete and submit a claim form online, or you can call 1-800- HILTONS (International: 00 800 888 44 888) and follow the telephone representatives instructions to process the claim.

Please note: your claim has to be submitted within 24 hours of making your reservation and at least 24 hours prior to your arrival at the hotel. The same accommodations must be available for purchase at the Lower price when Hilton validate your claim.

The Fine Print

Hilton Best Price Guarantee does not apply in the following situations:

 • Prices available on “opaque” websites where the hotel brand and specific hotel are not known until the booking is made (e.g., Priceline.com, Hotwire.com).
 • Hotel packages or travel packages which may include hotel, airfare, car rental, food and beverage offers or other similar packages or amenities.
 • Discount or negotiated prices not available to the general public, including but not limited to the following rates: membership (e.g., AAA, AARP or Saga), corporate, government, promotional, unpublished, Senior HHonors®, employee, offline wholesale/FIT, pre-paid rates which may include a voucher (including electronic vouchers), group or other specially negotiated rates.
 • Reservations made within 24 hours of arrival.

Need a Hotel? It’s Best to Book Direct https://www.cardbenefit.com/need-hotel-best-book-direct/ https://www.cardbenefit.com/need-hotel-best-book-direct/#respond Sun, 13 Sep 2015 05:53:21 +0000 http://www.cardbenefit.com/?p=18417 For most of the hotel chains, even you are a loyalty member, if you don't book direct from them, you are not able to earn rewards points for hotel stays.

The post Need a Hotel? It’s Best to Book Direct appeared first on CardBenefit.

]]>
hotel-book-directThe competition between hotels and third party sites can be difficult, and much of the hotel industry has opposed the recent Expedia and Orbitz merger, concerned that it will mean higher commissions and costs.

Hotels are often unable to offer significantly lower rates due to the contracts with third party sites and governmental regulations that require chains to be clear about their published rates. As a result, the major chains are finding ways to make it worth your while, as well as theirs, to book directly through them.

For most of the hotel chains, even you are a hotel loyalty program member, if you don’t book direct from their website or hotel booking line, you are not able to earn rewards points for hotel stays. That means booking direct is the only way for members to earn hotel points for hotel stays. Recently, these major hotel groups have begun offering further benefits to people who arrange their stay directly through the chain such as free internet access, specific room choices, free breakfast and more.

Hilton

Hilton have digital check-in through their app to avoid long waits. Customers can choose their specific room, beyond the standard bed number and size; they can select the floor and the room on a floor plan.

Hilton also offer complimentary in-room and lobby standard internet access during stays at Waldorf Astoria™ Hotels & Resorts, Conrad® Hotels & Resorts, Curio – A Collection by Hilton, Hilton Hotels & Resorts, DoubleTree by Hilton™, Canopy™ by Hilton, Embassy Suites Hotels™ and Hilton Grand Vacations™. Diamond members can get complimentary in-room and lobby premium internet access.

If you find a lower available rate anywhere else, Hilton will match it – plus give you $50 credit back.

Marriott

Marriott promises to match the better rates you may find when looking to book elsewhere, and then offer 25% off when you book your stay directly through them. They allow cancellations, special room requests. Rewards members also get free wifi and mobile check-in.

IHG

If a lower room rate was found on other websites, IHG will provide the first night’s room price free and match the lower average nightly room price found for that stay for the rest of the nights of that stay. If for any reason your reservation cannot be honored, IHG will provide you with a room and transportation to another convenient and comparable hotel. And, IHG will pay for the full cost of the first night’s lodging price, plus tax.

Hyatt

Hyatt hotels emphasize the lack of hidden fees when booking through them. They provide a best-rate guarantee, along with a 20% discount for your entire stay. Hyatt also offers an e-concierge to help you plan your stay.

Overall, the optimum way to keep costs down, and reap the best possible rewards and benefits is to enter into the hotel rewards programs, and to book directly through the hotel chain. So that members are able to earn rewards points towards elite status, free night stays and room upgrades and benefit from the mobile check-in, free Wi-Fi, discounts and more.

The Hyatt Gold Passport™ loyalty program is praised for its easy points, easy rewards design. Members can earn rewards points when they stay at Hyatt properties around the world, or from purchases with Hyatt’s rewards partners, venue bookings through Hyatt Gold Passport Planner Rewards, spending on the Hyatt credit card, and more.

Earn Hyatt Gold Passport points from hotel stays

As a Hyatt Gold Passport rewards member, you earn 5 points for every $1 spent on eligible stays and purchases at participating Hyatt hotel brands. The Hyatt Gold Passport rewards program has 3 levels: Gold, Platinum, and Diamond. When you reach Platinum status, you earn an additional 15% point bonus, or 5.75 points for every $1 spent. At Diamond status, you earn an additional 30% point bonus, or 6.5 points for every $1 spent.

Earn HGP points from rewards partners

You can earn Hyatt Gold Passport points from participating rewards partners, such as MGM Resorts, Avis Car Rental, and shopping and dining locations worldwide.

HGP members who are visiting participating restaurants and spas just have to provide their HGP account number to the Hyatt Associate at the outlet at the time of payment to process the earned points on eligible charges. They will earn 5 HGP base points per $1USD. These eligible non-stay charges do not count towards Platinum or Diamond status, and outlet visits will not count as stays or nights towards earning Hyatt Gold Passport tier status.

Earn HGP points with Events and Meetings

Members can even earn reward points for meetings and events, because Hyatt believes in recognizing and rewarding the planners behind every successful gathering. With the Hyatt Gold Passport Planner Rewards™ program, you can collect points for your meetings and catering/banqueting events at any Hyatt hotel or resort worldwide.

You will earn 1 Hyatt Gold Passport™ bonus point for every eligible $1USD spent on eligible meeting revenue, and up to 50,000 bonus points for each event. Every qualifying meeting or event helps you earn credit toward achieving elite tier status in the Hyatt Gold Passport program. Bonus points are awarded for eligible spendings on guest rooms, meetings rooms, banquets, and in-house catering. These points can be split up to three ways to reward co-workers or colleagues who helped plan the event.

After 3 qualifying meetings or events, you will be upgraded to Platinum status. After 10 qualifying meetings or events, you will automatically be bumped up to the highest level of membership at Diamond status. A qualifying meeting is defined as 10 or more occupied rooms per night.

There are many ways you can redeem your Hyatt rewards points, and if you enjoyed hosting your event with Hyatt, you can use your points for credits on future events at Hyatt hotels. You can redeem Future Meeting Credit Awards by calling 866-614-4484.

Future Meeting Credit Points Required
$200 Event Credit 15,000 Points
$400 Event Credit 30,000 Points
$600 Event Credit 45,000 Points

Are Rewards points and miles interchangeable?

You can convert your already owned points to a frequent flyer program online. To convert points to miles, you must have a minimum of 5,000 available HGP points. Points are converted to miles at a conversion rate of 1,250 points to 500 miles (2.5 to 1); after the minimum 5,000, additional point conversion can be made in increments of 1,250. If you do not have enough points to convert points to miles, you can purchase the additional points in order to convert.

When you convert 50,000 HGP points, you get 20,000 miles, plus a 5,000 mile bonus for a total of 25,000 miles. When you convert 50,000 HGP points to Southwest Airlines® Rapid Rewards points, you will receive 24,000 points plus a 6,000 point bonus for a total of 30,000 Rapid Rewards points.

Currently, all HGP points converted to miles are final. Once HGP points have been converted into bonus miles, they will no longer be available for use in the HGP program.

The Fine Print

 • Points will be immediately deducted from your account for conversion; but the miles can take 6-8 weeks to appear on your account.
 • Because converted miles are “bonus”, they do not count toward upgraded tier status in participating Travel Partner programs.
 • HGP points to miles conversions are available on participating Travel Partners. HGP points are not eligible for conversion into M life Tier Credits.
 • Hyatt Gold Passport Planner Rewards Company Accounts are not allowed to participate in the Hyatt Gold Passport Points to Miles program.

Convert Hyatt points to airline miles

You can also transfer your already owned points to a frequent flyer program online.

Convert to different travel partner currency

Miles is a generic term used for measuring conversion rates. Here are some travel partners that support different conversion ratios:

If you convert: 5,000 HGP points

You will receive:

 • 4,000 Aeromexico/LanChile km
 • 3,200 China Eastern Airlines
 • 2,400 Qantas Points
 • 2,400 Southwest Airlines Points
 • 3,000 Virgin Atlantic Airways

Earn Bonus airline miles

When you convert 50,000 HGP points, you receive 20,000 miles plus a 5,000 mile bonus for a total of 25,000 additional miles. When you convert 50,000 Hyatt Gold Passport points to Southwest Airlines® Rapid Rewards points, you will receive 24,000 points plus a 6,000 point bonus for a total of 30,000 Rapid Rewards points.

How to maximize your airline miles

As you might have noticed already, earning airline miles directly is at a rate of miles/qualifying stay, while converting points into miles is a conversion rate of 1,250 points per 500 miles.

Let’s take a look at an example. Assuming you are a Gold member and you spend $1,000 in a qualifying Hyatt stay, you earn five points per eligible dollar, and earn a total of 5,000 HGP points. Platinum members earn a 15% bonus, or 5,750 HGP points; Diamond members earn a 30% bonus, or 6,500 HGP points. If we convert this at a rate of 2.5 points to 1 mile, we get a conversion of 2,000 miles as a Gold member, 2,300 as a Platinum member, or 2,600 as a Diamond member. If you were earning miles directly, you only earn roughly 500 miles per stay, no matter how long you stay or how much you spend.

Let’s say you spend under $200 on a qualifying stay. That earns you either 5*200 = 1000 HGP points, which at the conversion rate is only 400 airline miles, or less than the rate per stay if you were to earn miles directly. If you are not a frequent stayer of Hyatt, or you do not spend a lot on your stays, then it might be beneficial to earn miles directly.

However, let’s take into consideration points/miles earnings in the long run. Every 50,000 HGP points converted can earn you 25,000 additional miles. Since 50,000 HGP points converts to 20,000 airline miles at most participating airlines, your total earnings would be 20,000 converted miles + 25,000 additional miles for a total of 45,000 airline miles. If you frequent Hyatt hotels, this is a great bonus to take advantage of.

The Fine Print

 • Points will be immediately deducted from your account for conversion; but the miles can take 6-8 weeks to appear on your account.
 • All HGP points converted to miles are final. Once HGP points have been converted into bonus miles, they will no longer be available for use in the HGP program.

Regency/Grand Club upgrade costs 3,000 points and Suite upgrades cost 6,000 points. Suite upgrade awards are not valid at Park Hyatt Beaver Creek Resort, Park Hyatt Sydney, Andaz Tokyo, Hyatt Regency Phuket Resort, Hyatt Regency Tulsa, Hyatt Regency Wichita, Hyatt Key West Resort and Spa, Hyatt Manila City of Dreams, Hyatt Santa Barbara, Hyatt Residence Club resorts, Hyatt Place hotels and M life resorts.

To reserve your reward nights or upgrade your room via phone, call 1-800-228-3360 or your nearest Hyatt Worldwide Reservation Centre.

How do I maximize my HGP Points value?

When redeeming HGP points, you can compare the rewards earn rate of different redemption options to see if you are getting the most of your points. To estimate the rewards earn rate, divide the standard rate of the hotel stay by the number of HGP points required to redeem one night. Let’s look at a few hotel stay redemption examples for a night near San Diego, California:

///This Hyatt Regency in the La Jolla Village is a 4.5-star upper upscale hotel brand. It has a nightly average of $325 USD, and requires 15,000 HGP points per night to redeem. Let’s estimate the point-value of this redemption:

$325/15,000 = 0.0217, or 2.17 cents per point

Let’s look at another redemption option. This is the Andaz brand also located in San Diego; this is a 5-star luxury brand, with an average nightly rate of $299 and a redemption rate of 20,000 HGP points per night.

$299/20,000 = 0.01495, or 1.495 cents per point

Although the Andaz has a lower nightly rate as a higher-ranked hotel brand, its redemption value is lower than that of Hyatt Regency’s. You might consider booking the Hyatt Regency when redeeming with points, and the Andaz when not.

Here is another brand, the Hyatt Place, a 4-star upscale brand located in Vista-Carlsbad. The nightly rate is $164, and it only requires 8,000 points a night to redeem. Here’s this hotel’s earn-rate value:

$164/8,000 = 0.0205, or 2.05 cents per point

The Hyatt Place is not ranked as high as the Andaz, but what would be used to redeem 2 nights at the Andaz can redeem 5 nights at the Hyatt Place. Paying for 2 nights at the Andaz would have been roughly $600, while 5 nights in Hyatt Place would have been $820; both reward redemptions cost 40,000 HGP points. In general, for Hyatt hotel brands, you want to aim for point values above 2 cents per point in order to maximize your earning-rate.

How do I redeem HGP points for airline miles?

With Hyatt Gold Passport, you receive 1 mile for every 2.5 HGP point you convert, beginning with a minimum of 5,000 points and increasing in increments of 1,250. When you convert at least 50,000 HGP points, you also earn 5,000 Bonus Miles. Currently, you cannot redeem HGP points directly for flight tickets. Convert your points here.

expiredMany people accrue their hotel program points with a specific goal in mind – a big vacation, event, or other reward – and do their best to be patient as they collect their points. However, hotel reward programs, such as the Hilton HHonors program, have rules regarding how points are spent, and their shelf life.

If your account goes unused for a designated amount of time you will lose all the points you have accumulated, and your account will be declared inactive. In order to prevent this, you must take at least one of several actions to maintain your account, and keep your points from expire.

Keep An Active HHonors Account

HHonors members have 12 months to participate in eligible activities that will keep the account open and active. If you lose your points, you may be able to keep your inactive account for up to five years; that will be decided by program managers. To hold on to your points, however, you must do one of the following within a year:

 • Stay at a participating Hilton Worldwide hotel.
 • Earn HHonors points by making qualifying purchases from approved partners, or with a Hilton brand credit card.
 • Purchase more HHonors points.
 • Donate your HHonors points using the Hilton HHonors Giving Back program.

Of these options, the easiest and most beneficial way to accrue points, and keep your HHonors account open, is by using one of several Hilton brand credit cards. These cards have the convenience of credit card spending while allowing you to gather points at a faster rate, and reap other special rewards and offers as the credit card provider offers them.

Hilton HHonors Credit Cards

There are several options for credit cards associated with Hilton HHonors. They not only help you earn points toward your Hilton account with every use, they also offer other benefit options and rewards.

The Citi Hilton HHonors Reserve Card offers a certificate for two weekend nights if you make $2,500 worth of purchases within four months of opening the card. The Hilton HHonors Surpass Card from American Express allows you to earn 12 Hilton HHonors bonus points for every dollar spent on qualifying purchases at participating hotels and resorts. You can also gain 60,000 extra points if you spend $3,000 within three months of activating the card account. Owning either of these cards gives you HHonors Gold status.

The Citi Hilton HHonors Visa Signature Card currently has a limited time offer of 75,000 bonus points if you make $2,000 in purchases within three months of opening the card account. This card provides you with six bonus points for each dollar spent at participating Hilton brand hotels and resorts. The Hilton HHonors Card from American Express offers 40,000 HHonors bonus points upon spending $750 within three months of the card’s activation, as well as seven HHonors bonus points with approved purchases from Hilton hotels and associated brands. Both of these cards offer HHonors Silver program status.

For more information on these credit cards and their offers, visit the Hilton HHonors credit cards web page. To find out the details of Hilton’s point expiration policies, visit their Terms and Conditions page.
